China's first institute for the study of carbon sequestration was set up in Beijing on Tuesday by the China Green Carbon Foundation (CGCF).
Since it was founded in July 2010, the CGCF has been devoted to combating climate change by increasing carbon sinks and reducing emissions across the country, said Liu Yuhe, the organization's director-general.

So far the public foundation has raised 96.8 million yuan ($14.7 million), which it has used to plant 8,000 hectares of trees across the country to offset carbon emissions, Liu said.
